F
eatured here are small pieces of gold ore from California. This is native gold and the host rock it formed in, a combined 10.5 Grains (Troy). Visible gold can be seen in each piece shown and being offered here. If you know much about gold ores, you'll understand that means they're rich. Not large by any means, 3 to 4 mm long on average and a lousy investment, yet fans of native gold in it's rawest form should enjoy this assortment of mini specimens.
For years,
I chipped ore samples off ledges, scoured old mine dumps, picked up float scattered here and there. Always hoping and often expecting to see gold, I never did. Milled up in a mortar, occasionally, a little color would show up when the finely-pounded dust was panned out, but the Au content wouldn't be enough to weigh. If your interest is lode, however, tiny colors in a pan might be good-enough to warrant staking lode claims. In many cases, a gigantic deposit of low-grade ore adds up to an enormously profitable gold mine. Today's gold spot makes such a prospect even more promising. Only once did I ever mill up a piece of ore with enough gold in it to jiggle my powder scale. Unfortunately, the host wasn't in close proximity to any obvious vein outcroppings. In such cases, you're usually powerless to trace a randomly-found alluvial rock back to it's source.

A
s operator/sole proprietor at Gold of Eldorado, I actively mined gold for 18+ years. Beginning long ago, in a past life, perhaps, something in the golden mystique of this rare, precious metal attracted me to it. Searching for native placer (gold), working with it in it's different forms, and marketing became a life-way. If, like myself, you're a big fan of gold, there's a lot to see here at

INDIE MINER
For the independent-minded person, becoming a gold miner is about as good as it gets.
If you think mining’s golden gravy, however, think again. There’s a lot about it that’s like s... on a shingle. It may add years to your prospecting career if you adopt a philosophical attitude toward future negative results. The thing I appreciated most about being an 'indie' miner was there was no 'blame game.' You didn't have to make excuses or apologize to other people for your own mistakes or bad choices. How hard a person works and where they dig is entirely up to them. When opportunity knocks, be prepared to answer the door. If things aren't panning out where you're at, keep moving, keep looking. Pack up your gear and head for greener pastures. You may eventually realize results are improving. From an educational perspective, I consider that empirically-attainable advancement.
In lone wolf prospecting, it's mainly when you confide in others you run the risk of having your pocket picked. Chalk failures off to vicissitudes and the flat out difficulty in finding good, workable ground. Be discrete who you trust 'cos, lets face it, not everyone is worth trusting. Many gold-diggers will jump into your hole without a second thought if they think you're into pay-dirt. Like other businesses, this trade can be cutthroat. Truth is, claim jumping's a fairly common practice. I never found that much gold during my career, so when somebody picks your pocket, paystreak, or jumps your claim, it cuts to the quick. That honey hole you found could represent the only decent gold you were destined to find for the entire season.
I've known some very accomplished finders of gold in my time. These were the men who did not need to jump into other people's holes; nor did they ever wish to. In prospecting, most visible signs needed to steer you to a rich lead, patch, or body of ore are scattered about the surrounding landscape. Do everything in your means to reclaim the land when you're finished digging. Find inner peace, be respectful to the land and to other miners. Keep the faith and you will eventually find some good gold.
